This year, District 200 is offering a new course at the two high schools — Intro to Teaching 1 and Intro to Teaching 2. These new courses are part of the District’s Career Pathways Program which is designed to give students an opportunity to thoughtfully select high school courses that are aligned with their personal areas of interest and career goals. Students will receive information, obtain skills, and experience school and work-related activities that will help them maximize the potential of their high school years. As part of the two new courses, students complete 30 clinical hours or fieldwork in a District 200 school. In the first semester alone, 65 students participated in Intro to Teaching I and were able to support classrooms at all of District 200’s elementary and middle schools.
At the Board’s March 8, 2023 meeting, four Wheaton North students Kylie Dohlen, Thomas Drabik, Jasmine Guzman, and Beatrice Peterson shared their experiences in the new course and what it was like to work with students in the classroom. For all of them, working with students in the classroom affirmed their desire to work with children in the future, whether in education directly or even in pediatric dentistry.
