We provide services for the health and safety of the school community by providing emergency care, facilitating access to school health care, and identifying and managing health issues in the school that inhibit student learning.

Who is in the health office?
Every school has an assigned Certified School Nurse and each health office is staffed with a Registered Nurse and a health aide to assist with providing continuous health care for the students and staff.

What does the school nurse do every day?

  • Provide care and first aid for illness and injury at school.

  •  Maintain the school’s communicable disease prevention and control program.

  •  Provide health information and counseling for students, parents, and staff.

  •  Store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school. Prescription and non-prescription medication administered at school must be approved by a physician *See Form* and brought to school by a parent or guardian.

  •  Identify students with special health concerns and develop health care plans with students and families.

  •  Maintain accurate records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions.

  •  Provide health programs including education and screening for vision, hearing & dental.

  •  Be a resource for health and wellness for classroom teachers, staff and parents and providing expertise on health information and curriculum.

  • Communicate with students, families, staff and community agencies to identify and provide services and programs to meet the physical and mental health needs of children and families.

  • Collaborate with the school psychologist, social worker, and specialists to identify and provide health information, services, modifications, and health plans for students.

  • Participate as crisis team members and provide crisis intervention for students and staff in the event of sudden illness or injury.
