WHEATON NORTH ON NEWSWEEK’S
LIST OF TOP U.S. HIGH SCHOOLS

Wheaton North High School has been honored in the May 6 issue of Newsweek Magazine as one of the top high schools in the nation.  With its Best High Schools list, Newsweek recognized schools that do the best job of preparing a variety of students for the rigors of college.

Newsweek’s initial list ranked Wheaton North at 1,011 out of 1,139 high schools nationwide.  After additional qualifying schools submitted their data, Wheaton North’s ranking dropped slightly to 1,068 out of 1,200. That still ranks Wheaton North in the top 5% of U.S. high schools.  Thirty-two of the schools in the listing are from Illinois.

The rankings are determined by a Challenge Index.  The total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests given at a school in May, are divided by the number of seniors graduating in May or June.  The goal is to honor schools that have done the best job in providing all students with the opportunity to take AP exams.

Dr. Margo Sorrick, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services in Community Unit School District 200, said there has been significant growth in the number of AP classes offered at the high school level.   “An initial analysis of AP
in District 200, identified the need to increase the availability of these classes so our students would not only be competitive with benchmark Districts, but also with their peers. As a result, there has been a deliberate and planned effort to increase AP offerings annually.  There’s been nothing but resounding support from the Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Gary Catalani on this issue,” Dr. Sorrick concluded.
