Last Saturday, more than 70 District 200 community members walked or ran in the Foodie 5K benefiting the Northern Illinois Food Bank. This is the third year team District 200 Shares has participated in the race.
In the past three years, the team has raised funds to support 151 holiday meal boxes; four mobile food pantry events distributing over 15,000 lbs of essential food; 96 gallons of milk each week to local pantries; $4,000 to local pantries to help them purchase healthy food items; and a commercial refrigerator for a local pantry allowing them more space for fresh, healthy foods.
Started by Pleasant Hill parent Terese Janik, fondly known as "the food lady," the District 200 Shares team has inspired others to give as well. This past winter, the Rotary Club of Wheaton raised more than $33,000 to purchase mobile food pantries for District 200 families through the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Each month for this calendar year, the District and the food bank will host at least one mobile pantry at various places in the community that are open to all District 200 families. A complete list of mobile pantries can be found on our website.
This year the team set out to raise $10,000 for the Foodie 5K to directly support additional hunger relief programs in our area. As of today, they have raised $9,082. You can help them reach their goal by donating here.
